Consumer pressure washers build pressure by forcing water through a restricted nozzle. When pressure is weak, pulses, or disappears while water still flows, the cause usually sits somewhere on the path from the water spigot to the nozzle. The most common consumer-safe causes are a restricted supply, a clogged external inlet screen, or a clogged or damaged removable nozzle. Causes past those points — inside the pump, unloader, bypass valve, engine, fuel system, or electrical housing — are not safe to diagnose or repair here.
Symptom comparison: weak, pulsing, and no working pressure
Weak steady pressure
Pressure builds but stays below what you expect. Often a restricted supply, a partly clogged inlet screen, or a partly clogged nozzle.
Pulsing pressure
Pressure rises and falls rhythmically. Commonly a supply restriction, air at the inlet, or a clogged nozzle. A pump or unloader cause is internal and needs a service provider.
Water flows but no working pressure
Water exits the nozzle but never builds pressure. Check the supply, inlet screen, and nozzle first. If those are clear, suspect an internal fault and stop.
