No water at all
No water exits the nozzle. Start with the water source, supply hose, inlet screen, and air in the line.

The first safety check depends on your machine type. Electric and gas models share the high-pressure-path and smoke/vibration hazards below, but each adds a type-specific electrical or engine hazard. Any positive hazard means stop — do not continue into the routine external checks.
Electric-only hazards
Repeated breaker or GFCI trip, abnormal electric motor behavior, a damaged power cord, or visible water inside the electrical housing. Water plus damaged electrical equipment can cause fatal shock.
Gas-only hazards
Fuel leak, smoke, or abnormal gas-engine behavior such as stalling, surging, or severe vibration on restart.
Shared high-pressure hazards
Damaged, bulging, or leaking high-pressure hose; leaking spray gun; or a visible leak at the pump area.
Shared thermal hazards
Smoke, burning smell, or severe vibration from either machine type. Stop and service before any further use.
Never open the motor, engine, fuel system, or electrical housing to investigate a hazard. Never check for leaks by touch. Shut the machine down per the manual, release pressure using the manufacturer procedure, and contact a qualified service provider.
Shared safe external checks
If no hazard is present, every symptom guide follows the same consumer-safe order. Only observe parts the manufacturer designates as user-serviceable, with the machine off, unplugged or shut off, and pressure released.
- Water supply. Spigot fully open, supply hose unkinked, no visible inlet restriction at the garden-hose connection.
- Shutdown and pressure release. Confirm the machine is off, electric models are unplugged, the water is off, and the manufacturer shutdown and pressure-release procedure is complete.
- External inlet screen. Remove the manufacturer-designated external inlet screen and inspect it. Do not reach past it into the pump.
- Removable nozzle. Remove the removable nozzle per the manual and inspect it. Match any replacement to your exact model and specification.
- Visible leak check. Inspect visually only — never by touch. A leak at the hose, gun, or pump area means stop.
